CNN —From this week, soccer fans will be able to buy Australian goalkeeper Mackenzie Arnold’s Nike jersey, more than six months after she wore the purple top at the Women’s World Cup. Arnold kept a tournament-high four clean sheets during the Matildas’ run to the semifinals of last year’s Women’s World Cup, which was co-hosted by Australia and New Zealand. That prompted England shot-stopper Mary Earps to campaign vociferously for the sportswear company to release the women’s goalkeeper jerseys ahead of the tournament. CNN has contacted Nike for comment regarding the release of the Australian goalkeeper jersey. Arnold kept four clean sheets at the Women's World Cup last year.

The state’s illegal market had flourished for decades, anchored in the storied “Emerald Triangle” region in the northern end of the state. Dicus said in 2023 his department served 411 search warrants for illegal marijuana grow sites countywide and recovered $370 million. “The reality is that Proposition 64, in the fine print, took illicit marijuana and moved it from a felony to a misdemeanor. Economic models buckle under strain of climate reality
  + stars: | 2023-11-22 | by ( Mark John | ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +6 min
But detractors say those numbers are the product of economic models that are not fit to capture the full extent of climate damage. A year earlier, the Trump administration cited similar models to justify replacing the Obama-era Clean Power Plan with one allowing higher emissions from coal-burning plants. At issue are the "integrated assessment models" (IAMs) economists use to draw conclusions on anything from output losses to financial risk or the pricing of carbon markets. Line chart with data from Climate Tracker shows varying predictions of global warming damage as percentage of GDP. "Our main message is: 'Economists, speak to climate scientists and come up with results that make sense'," he said.

If you have ever wondered what it might feel like to be sucked into a black hole — twisted, stretched, confused, doomed — you could do worse than trip through “The Warped Side of Our Universe, An Odyssey Through Black Holes, Wormholes, Time Travel and Gravitational Waves,” a collaborative book project by Kip Thorne, a physicist at the California Institute of Technology, and Lia Halloran, a visual artist and chair of the art department at Chapman University in Orange, Calif.Dr. Thorne brings impressive credentials to the task. In 2017 he won the Nobel Prize in Physics for his work on the Laser Interferometry Gravitational-Wave Observatory, or LIGO, which discovered space-time vibrations resulting from the collision of two distant black holes. He was also the executive producer of the movie “Interstellar.” Ms. Halloran, who grew up surfing and skateboarding in the Bay Area, became obsessed with science after a high school internship at the Exploratorium in San Francisco. The book consists of illustrations of what Dr. Thorne likes to call the “space-time storms” predicted by general relativity, Einstein’s theory of gravity, alternating with his own explanations of the physics, which appear in verse. Many of the illustrations, which are in ink on drafting film, portray Ms. Halloran’s wife, Felicia, being whipped around, crushed and twisted by the forces of nature.

By Steve GarmhausenThe Federal Reserve’s decision to leave interest rates unchanged Wednesday means your savings accounts will continue to enjoy decades-high yields of 5% or more. The question of how long interest rates will remain robust matters to those making decisions about how to save. Savings accounts are attractive because balances are readily available for emergencies or planned expenses like a home down payment—but their interest rates can change quickly in response to Fed actions. Savings accounts vs. CDsThe best savings accounts and CDs were paying around half a percentage point of annual interest before the Fed started raising rates last spring. Safe, liquid alternatives to bank accounts include Treasury bonds—the one-year T-bill was recently yielding 5.4%—and money-market mutual funds, which yield a hair less.

What the Nobel Prizes get wrong about science

Peter Brzezinski, the secretary of the committee for the Nobel chemistry prize, said there were no plans to change the rule. He said the Nobel Prize committees, at least for science prizes, are “innately conservative.”DiversityOther criticism leveled at the Nobel Prizes includes the lack of diversity among winners. Of course, these flaws and gaps only matter because the Nobels are far better known than other science prizes, Rees added. The Nobel Prize in physiology or medicine will be announced on Monday, followed by the physics prize on Tuesday and the Nobel Prize in chemistry on Wednesday. The Nobel Prize for literature and the Nobel Peace Prize will be announced on Thursday and Friday, respectively.

In March, more than 100 countries completed a groundbreaking treaty to protect the high seas after years of negotiations. The high seas, or international waters, constitute more than 60% of the world's oceans but have not been under any protection. Greenpeace said fishing hours on the high seas increased by 8.5% from 2018 to 2022, and were up 22.5% in areas that need special protection. Greenpeace said that needs to happen before 2025 if there is any hope of achieving the "30 by 30" target.

Christopher Nolan's new film 'Oppenheimer' features complex science. Science advisors on his latest film, "Oppenheimer," told Insider that's because he teaches himself the science before he even sits down to write. Thorne, who attended lectures by the real J. Robert Oppenheimer while studying at Princeton, has first-hand knowledge about Oppenheimer the man, not just his science. So he said that he clarified and expanded on some of the interactions these famous men would have had with one another for Nolan's film. Oppenheimer was an expert in quantum physics, and was responsible for bringing the discipline to the US, Thorne said.

Cillian Murphy plays the "father of the atomic bomb", J. Robert Oppenheimer, in the new film. Science advisors said Murphy asked questions about the theories to accurately portray his character. For his part, Thorne met Murphy virtually and talked with him about scientific theory broadly, and Oppenheimer the man, whom Thorne studied under at Princeton, personally. Saltzberg met Murphy while working with production designers to draft the equations written on the chalkboards throughout the movie. For his role as a physicist in the 2007 movie "Sunshine", Murphy met with scientists at CERN to prepare for the role.

In addition to prize money, FIFA committed to paying $42 million to the federations and players’ clubs for Women’s World Cup preparations. Havana Solaun (R) and Jamaica are appearing at their second ever Women's World Cup. But for the players, equal pay encompasses more than simply closing this gap to the salaries enjoyed by male footballers. “The classicist who wants to be modern, meeting the modernist who wants to be classical.” So says Elizabeth Taylor, summing up the fractious encounter between the revered Shakespearian actor John Gielgud, and her new husband, the actor Richard Burton. It’s 1964, Taylor and Burton are the most famous couple in the world, and Burton is rehearsing the role of Hamlet for a Broadway production that Gielgud is directing. It’s not going well. That’s the setting for “The Motive and the Cue,” a new play directed by Sam Mendes, written by Jack Thorne, and starring Mark Gatiss as Gielgud, Johnny Flynn as Burton and Tuppence Middleton as Taylor. The play, which opened to enthusiastic reviews in May and runs through July 15 at the National Theater, in London, was an idea born out of the pandemic, said Caro Newling, a co-founder with Mendes of Neal Street Productions, which developed the show.
